When it comes to nutrient dense superfoods beets are one of the superstars. Just cut open a raw beet, and you can see the dark beet red color oozing out. Pure beet juice purifies, oxygenates and energizes our blood, which is the life force of the body.

Beets contain phytonutrients called betalains. Two of the betalains, betanin, and vulgaxanthin are excellent for providing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and detoxification support to the body. It is the betalain pigment that gives beets their dark red color. Though betalain can be found in other vegetables such as chard or rhubarb, beets contain a much higher concentration.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are two phytonutrients in beets. Though lutein itself is more concentrated in the leaves of the beet, it is also found along with zeaxanthin in the beetroot. These phytonutrients are important to overall health, but most especially to eye health.
