We have written extensively about the importance of adding organic sulfur to your diet over the past few years, and many of our readers have followed that advice with astounding results. Organic sulfur (MSM) is a foundational mineral needed to build, repair, rejuvenate, nourish, and cleanse the cells of your body. Most of the cutting-edge researchers promoting sulfur recommend taking MSM and vitamin C together because they understand that, in conjunction, they have a much more profound effect on your overall health than they do separately. Sulfur opens up your cells and makes them more permeable so the things they need to survive and replicate get in there, and vitamin C is like a master swordsman that slices and dices the cellular enemies that don’t belong in there.

Why Has Sulfur Supplementation Become So Popular?

Sulfur is the sixth most abundant macro mineral in breast milk and the third most abundant mineral based on a percentage of total body weight. [i] While the dietary supplement market is saturated with thousands of different products claiming to promote better health, none can match what sulfur alone can do for alleviating so many different ailments in such a short period of time.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), better known as organic sulfur, has been researched and studied extensively for decades. Using sulfur as an adjunct in your daily diet is becoming more recognized as one of the primary ways to stay healthy and/or recover from poor health.  Sulfur is present in over 150 different chemical compounds within the human body, making it the most valuable building mineral our bodies need. Sulfur is becoming more widely appreciated as a really significant nutrient, without which many other things won’t work correctly. Sadly, most people are not getting enough sulfur from their diet anymore. Sulfur plays a crucial role in detoxification, delivery of nutrients, and also in inflammatory related conditions. Why Should Someone Be Concerned About Sulfur, Aren’t They Getting Enough From Food?

 In a perfect world, you would and should be able to obtain all of the sulfur you need from the foods you eat. However, we are not in a perfect world, and you have to take several important factors into consideration.

  1. We are undergoing a massive chemical assault on a broad variety of our foods from pesticides and chemical based fertilizers, not to mention what’s in our water, air and cosmetics. All of these chemicals have a negative effect on sulfur and other nutrients, both in the soil and in our bodies. The same way that sulfur works as a delivery and transport mineral in our bodies to usher nutrition into your cells is the same thing it does in the soil. Sulfur hooks up with all of the nutritional elements in the soil and drives them from the dirt into the roots of the plants. The extensive application of pesticides and chemical based fertilizers have greatly interfered with this sulfur cycle. That means that our diets are devoid of a comprehensive range of minerals and nutrients, including sulfur, because modern farming practices have hindered this natural process from taking place correctly.
  1. Refined and processed foods contain almost no usable sulfur. Given the fact that the vast majority of people are eating far too many refined and processed foods which have had their natural nutritional components basically stripped out entirely, there is no possible way you can expect to receive sufficient sulfur or other essential minerals to ward off disease unless you supplement your diet. When talking about processed foods, we also need to include pasteurized foods too. When cooked at high temperatures, sulfur simply wafts off in the steam. That’s why it’s easily removed during cooking and processing. Pasteurization cuts the MSM content by approximately 50 percent. In order to ensure you’re getting the most MSM from any food, it must be either raw or as minimally processed as possible, which is highly unlikely for the majority of people living today in America. Look at this list of medical conditions that sulfur can help benefit or alleviate, and this is by no means complete.

Skin Disorders: MSM has a tremendous influence on acne, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, rashes, liver spots, wrinkles, and other skin disorders. The sulfur compound in MSM has an anti-inflammatory and skin-repairing effects, which may be useful for inflammatory skin conditions.

Sulfur is called nature’s “beauty mineral” because it keeps skin smooth and youthful and hair glossy. Sulfur is essential for the production of collagen and keratin, proteins needed for the health and maintenance of skin, nails and hair. Several experiments have shown that dermatological disorders, including those that are allergy-related, respond favorably to a diet supplemented by MSM. [iv]

Allergies: One of the fastest acting and most noticeable aspects of organic sulfur is its effect on alleviating symptoms of allergies almost immediately and without side effects. Over-the-counter allergy medications are some of the largest class of drugs sold by pharmaceutical companies, so this is an epidemic problem that needs a better solution than potentially deadly drugs that over 35 million Americans rely on regularly for relief. You owe it to yourself to give MSM a try if you haven’t already.  MSM may be as effective as any anti-histamine available on the market. Sulfur does not act as an anti-histamine substance that inhibits histamine production. Its effectiveness is due to its ability to block the receptivity of histamine in the sensitive tissue of the mucous membranes of nasal passages. This process is believed to prevent the histamine from creating the inflammation, swelling, and fluid build-up that can come with allergies. Sulfur also helps to kill candida and re-establish healthy gut flora which are also culprits in causing allergies. Below is a study worth pointing out that should give allergy sufferers a lot of hope.

A Multi-Centered, Open Label Trial on the Safety and Efficacy of Methylsulfonylmethane in the Treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

 Fifty participants completed the study. They consumed 2,600 mg of MSM orally per day for 30 days. Clinical respiratory symptoms and energy levels were evaluated by a Seasonal Allergy Symptom Questionnaire at the beginning of the study and again on days-7, 14, 21 and 30. Immune and inflammatory reactions were also determined by laboratory tests. After one week, the frequency of upper respiratory signs and symptoms (e.g., runny nose, watery and itchy eyes, nasal obstruction, paroxysmal sneezing) was significantly improved compared to initial levels. At the three-week mark, participants also had significant improvements in lower respiratory symptoms (e.g., coughing, shortness of breath and other lung or chest symptoms). All respiratory improvements were maintained through the 30-day visit. Energy levels increased significantly by day-14, an increase that continued through day-30. Minimal side effects were associated with the use of MSM.

Joint Health/Arthritis: One of the most common uses for MSM has been overall joint health and treating arthritis related conditions. Given the fact that over 16,500 Americans unnecessarily die every year from arthritis medications, it would be wise to consider making MSM a regular part of your diet. Many customers who use MSM for arthritis related conditions have reported much less pain and dramatically increased mobility.

According to the U.S. NIH Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, and the second most common cause of long-term disability among middle-aged and older adults in the United States. Based on their findings there is evidence to support the use of Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) for arthritis.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted that did show positive results. Fifty men and women, 40-76 years of age with knee OA pain were enrolled in an outpatient medical center. Intervention was MSM 3g or placebo twice a day for 12 weeks (6g/day total). Outcomes included the Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index visual analogue scale (WOMAC), patient and physician global assessments (disease status, response to therapy), and SF-36 (overall health-related quality of life).

The results showed that compared to placebo; MSM produced significant decreases in WOMAC pain and physical function impairment (P<0.05). No notable changes were found in WOMAC stiffness and aggregated total symptoms scores. MSM also produced improvement in performing activities of daily living when compared to placebo on the SF-36 evaluation (P<0.05). [vii]

Inflammation: MSM is an anti-inflammatory agent, and it mitigates abnormal immune reactions that trigger inflammation. MSM has been proven to relieve inflammatory-related pain in the neck, back, hips, knees and shoulders. MSM supplements help treat a variety of inflammatory disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis. Sports injuries and tendonitis can benefit from using MSM. Published, peer-reviewed clinical research in the U.S. has shown MSM to be safe and effective for increasing joint comfort and supporting a healthy range of motion.

 Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia: Organic sulfur has shown to minimize, and in some cases eliminate CFS and Fibromyalgia.  In the book The Miracle of MSM by Stanley Jacob, chapter nine addresses the effect of MSM on Fibromyalgia. Dr. Jacob presents case histories where it was found that large doses of MSM could not only reduce the pain of fibromyalgia, but even eliminate it in some cases. The patient reports also indicate that the chronic fatigue was reduced or eliminated at the same time. The dose levels for the three successful case histories presented were five, ten and thirty grams per day. [viii]

PMS: Many women using MSM have reported fewer cramps, less PMS, and a general reduction of discomfort during menstruation. About four dozen women experiencing menopause and perimenopause report life was noticeably more pleasant with fewer and much less intense symptoms. In over a dozen reports, including thyroid conditions, hormonal imbalances were gradually eliminated. In many cases, all prescription medication was discontinued (at the member’s own initiative). In four cases, women in early menopause reported feeling much younger, less “stressed”, and began to menstruate again with little discomfort. [ix]

Hair Growth:  Organic sulfur can help your hair grow faster and healthier. Sulfur is one of the primary building blocks of hair and nails. MSM helps increase the rate of hair growth because it lengthens the growth phase (Anagen Phase) of the hair cycle. If you want your hair to grow longer use MSM.

“A double-blind, placebo-controlled, pilot trial, performed by Ronald M. Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D., showed that 100% of the subjects using MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane), a nutritional supplement that provides biologically active sulfur, showed increased hair growth compared to the group on placebo. In addition, 30% of the subjects showed improvement in hair brilliance, while none of the subjects on placebo showed such an improvement.” [x]

Dr. Thomas Levy, MD, JD, author of the book “Curing the Incurable: Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and Toxins” has become internationally recognized for his incredible research on the effects of IV vitamin C. Levy documents case after case where intravenous vitamin C therapy has brought a patient back from the brink of death.

While we are by no means making the claim that taking sulfur with vitamin C as a supplement is comparable to doing IV vitamin C, it is interesting how sulfur makes vitamin C so much more effective and can certainly help the average person maximize their health with far more bioavailable vitamin C getting into their cells. The fact is the average person who is not suffering with debilitating illness doesn’t require megadoses of vitamin C. In most cases typically 1,000-2,000 milligrams a day from a good bioavailable vitamin C supplement is plenty to provide your body the support it needs to achieve the full benefits.

Here is a quote worth noting from Levy on IV vitamin C:

The challenge that most who would even consider getting IV vitamin C infusions is the cost factor and where to get it done. The other issue is not enough doctors doing IV vitamin C have complete awareness of how valuable sulfur is and how incorporating it into this protocol can help make everything work more efficiently. While more doctors and health clinics are performing IV vitamin C and our own FDA recognizes its importance and benefits, it is still not widely available and most insurance companies won’t cover it, so that makes it a very expensive out-of-pocket procedure.

There is an alternative form of vitamin C called Liposomal vitamin C that is promoted by Thomas Levy because he has found it to be nearly as effective as the IV form. The concept with this product is it uses liposomes (fat) to increase the bioavailability of vitamin C, since water soluble vitamin C is not absorbed as well (if not paired with sulfur). Liposomal vitamin C can also potentially ease intestinal discomfort associated with taking high amounts of vitamin C.

While Liposomal vitamin C is a terrific option, no companies have combined it with sulfur to enhance its effectiveness. We believe there is an even less expensive, yet quite efficient way to get the full benefits of vitamin C at the cell level, and that is to take it in combination with MSM. While some users may have issues with the standard ascorbic acid in higher doses, one way around that is to use a buffered form of vitamin C. Unless you are in a life-threatening situation that requires immediate and urgent medical attention using IV vitamin C, then taking several thousand milligrams a day of a buffered form of vitamin C with 5-10 grams a day of MSM is more than enough to provide your body the daily cellular protection it needs to live at a high level of health.


Hopefully by now you are convinced that you need sulfur and vitamin C in your diet daily. Not all sulfur and vitamin C are created equal though. There are many inferior grades of these nutrients on the market that won’t perform to the level you need them to. Your health is worth the few extra bucks to give it the best. This isn’t to say that using cheap grades of sulfur and vitamin C won’t have any positive benefits because that wouldn’t be a genuine statement. However, if you want to achieve maximum protection and performance from what you spend your hard earned money on then you need to know a few things to look out for.

  • Don’t just select any vitamin C product thinking you are doing your body justice. Dirt cheap ascorbic acid supplements sold in a lot of the big box retailers and online companies are generally not as effective and most of it is derived from GMO corn.
  • You need buffered vitamin C to ensure better passage through the digestive system that is not sourced from GMO material.
  • Most MSM on the market is not manufactured using a distillation process which is the only way to guarantee purity and quality. Many inferior sources of MSM are made using a process called crystallization which is similar to how sea salt is taken from salt water. Crystallization is less expensive, and a lot easier and quicker. The problem is there is no way to ensure complete protection from bacteria and possibly heavy metal contamination, which are all effectively dealt with when it’s done by distillation.
  • Look for products that are not made with Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), high fructose corn syrup, or a bunch of fillers, binders, and excipients.
